About Region 4/SPAN Afterschool Programs
The Region 4/SPAN Afterschool Programs Office is supported by a grant from the California Department of Education (CDE) to provide technical assistance to K-12 Expanded Learning (before- and after-school) Programs funded through After School Education and Safety (ASES) and 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC) funds throughout the seven Bay Area counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, San Francisco, and Solano.
Extended Learning Programs are intended to provide a nurturing and educational space for students to engage in active, collaborative, and meaningful learning experiences that complement the school day, support skill mastery, and expand horizons. Student participants have access to daily academic skill reinforcement, physical activity, a nutritious snack/meal, enrichment, and homework support in addition to having a safe environment during the hours when they are in high danger of engaging in risky behaviors. Research suggests that Expanded Learning Programs contribute to students’ academic achievement, good behavior, and attendance rates. In addition, students who participate in high-quality programs benefit from positive learning experiences that enable them to build other critical life skills, including the ability to connect with their peers and role models, set goals, and make sound decisions.
The Region 4 Team provides ongoing regional trainings, meetings, and other professional development events and activities, including the annual Bridging the Bay Conference, to build the capacity of Expanded Learning professionals to develop and sustain exemplary programs. In addition, the Team offers coaching, consultation, and leveraging of resources to address individual programmatic needs. Our common goal is to support high-quality programs that build academic, health, and life skills to prepare students for college and careers. Our guiding principles include clear and consistent communication, ongoing collaboration, and commitment to quality programming.
